Fluid Innovation

The utilization of drilling fluid stands out as the most effective means to control pressure within an open well and prevent fluid flow or well breakdown.

A well-designed and meticulously maintained drilling fluid system can significantly enhance the penetration rate during drilling, address various technical well-related challenges, and safeguard the reservoir from potential damages.

Drilling fluids primarily fall into three categories. While water-based mud (WBM) is the most commonly employed system, it lacks distinctive advantages when compared to other formulations such as oil-based mud (OBM) or synthetics-based mud (SBM). Collectively known as non-aqueous fluids (NAF), OBM and SBM exhibit markedly superior performance in terms of well stability, hole-making speed, and overall drilling efficiency. Over the past decade, drilling fluid service providers have succeeded in developing high-performance water-based mud (HPWB), a refined version of WBM that generally offers similar benefits as OBM and SBM but at a lower cost.

Completion Fluid (Brine)

This fluid, commonly known as work-over fluid, is utilized for well completion. It typically consists of a saline solution containing chlorides or bromides, referred to as brine, and must be free of any solids. Completion fluids need to be compatible with both formation fluids and rock, as the use of other types of fluids, such as drilling fluids, may cause damage to productive zones. In addition to cleaning the wellbore post-drilling, completion fluid is employed to control down-hole pressure.

Typically, drilling fluid costs account for 5-20% of the total well expenses. However, a marginal increase in expenditures on drilling fluids can be offset by the superior performance achieved through HILCOT’s drilling fluid chemicals/additives and consultancy services. Consequently, we contribute to significant cost savings, cost avoidance, and an overall reduction in well expenses. It’s noteworthy that drilling fluids are occupying a growing share of total well costs, a trend that continues to rise.
